    The Facilities Management Division, Building Maintenance Section is seeking a Welder who will under supervision do acetylene burning, electric arc and oxy-acetylene welding in all positions on both light and heavy material so as to maintain the proper size, contour, fusion, penetration and strength of welds and to prevent undercut, overlap and slag inclusions in welds, performs related work.

    Typical tasks will include:

  • Reads and works from blueprints, sketches and working drawings
  • Properly uses various types of welding rods and machines, such as mig, tig, bore welding machines, servo graft burning machines.
  • Pre-heats and cleans metals
  • Lays out, cuts and fits materials for welding
  • Performs air arc plasma cutting and carbon air arc cutting; welds machinery, equipment, structures and bridges
  • Uses special hand and power tools
  • Brazes various non-ferrous metals
  • Brushes and grinds welds
  • May operate motor vehicles and equipment in the performance of assigned duties

Minimum Qual Requirements

Qualification Requirements

Five years of full-time welding experience acquired within the last ten years doing electric arc and oxy-acetylene welding in all positions on both light and heavy material. Two years of this experience must have been in oxy-acetylene welding.
License Requirements
Possession of a valid Welder's License issued by the New York City Department of Buildings, and certified for at least Class I Restricted Qualification Shop and Field (for groove welding of materials 3/4 inches or less in thickness, and for all fillet welding, both in all positions). At the time of appointment, appointees will be required to possess a Certificate of Fitness Type G38 Torch Use of 0-2 Combustion Gas, issued by the New York City Fire Department. Employees must maintain the Welder's License and the Certificate of Fitness during their employment.

  • Experience with acetylene burning, electric arc and oxy-acetylene welding

  • Experience reading and working from blueprints and sketches
  • Experience performing air arc plasma cutting and carbon air arc cutting

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
