Your role will focus on the traded market for renewable gas and related voluntary and regulated certificates in Europe with emphasis on opportunities in Nordic European markets, particularly Denmark.

What’s the role?

As a Regulatory Affairs Manager based in London, you will be accountable for providing regulatory intelligence and insight to the Renewable Gas Trading and Origination Team with respect to our Nordic countries portfolio.  Further, you will be responsible for influencing the further development of the regulatory framework for renewable gas in Nordic countries to protect protect/advance Shell’s interests.

You will also work with colleagues in the regulatory team and with colleagues in other departments to establish efficient and effective processes to ensure that business is conducted with compliance in the areas of biomethane certification demonstrating that energy is sourced from a renewable or decarbonised gas (e.g. licensing requirements, compliance markets requirements).

The role will require you to have a diverging set of skills where at times you will work on formal regulatory documents with a large amount of complex material to advise on commercial opportunities or draw compliance requirements. Additionally, you’ll need to have the ability to distil information, grasp the commercial concept, build a compelling argument and execute effective advocacy and lobbying in collaboration with colleagues in our Corporate Relation organisation This will entail communicating messages with confidence and credibility to a wide array of external stakeholders as well as aligning views internally across different renewable gas businesses.

Accountabilities of the role include:

  • Support the Renewable Gas Trading and Origination Team by analyzing, summarizing and explaining existing and emerging regulations impacting renewable gas businesses in Nordic countries in the short, medium, and long-term.
  • Understand interactions across the full renewable gas value chain to identify threats and opportunities, working in collaboration with the relevant Shell plc businesses in Europe, including Nature Energy.
  • Develop insights and identify opportunities to develop concrete plans to pursue these opportunities including, preparing material to engage traders, commercial leaders, and other senior stakeholders.
  • Represent Shell externally regarding renewables regulations and compliance with national regulators, industry bodies, and certification agencies as well as address requests from Regulators.
  • Support the identification of and alignment on Shell plc overall advocacy strategy for renewable gases in close collaboration with Corporate Relations, Policy& Advocacy as well as the relevant Shell plc businesses in Europe.
  • Serving as control focal point to ensure compliance (e.g. ability to advise traders and originators on whether proposed transactions fall within the regulatory framework) and suggest possible mitigations.

What we need from you

We’re keen to see as many of the following attributes on your CV:

  • Passion for the renewables space within a commercial environment, and the energy transition.
  • Good understanding of gas trading, particularly renewable gas and related certificates (e.g. guarantees of origin, proof of sustainability, etc.).
  • Expertise in regulations impacting trading of biomethane and related certificates such as the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), Gas Directive and Regulation, ETS as well as their implementation in Nordic markets, particularly Denmark. In case no expertise in these specific Regulations the candidate should demonstrate expertise in similarly commoditized markets and/or regulatory scopes.
  • An understanding of carbon reporting and accounting systems, both mandatory (e.g.: ETS and RED) and voluntary (e.g.: GHG protocol and Science Based Targets) and how these fit in the regulatory framework is desirable.
  • Commercial acumen and ability to work in a time critical environment and respond confidently under time pressure to challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate evidence-based opinions and to challenge the status quo.
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of information into manageable summaries/ highlights that could eventually drive effective advocacy and/or new business opportunities.
