The X-ray Science Division of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is offering an Assistant Physicist position to conduct research and development of the cavity-based x-ray free-electron lasers (CBXFELs) -- CBXFEL x-ray cavities in particular. CBXFELs are future fully coherent hard x-ray sources of utmost spectral brightness. The R&D will be performed in a framework of a collaborative project of ANL and SLAC (SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory). The project is focused on demonstration of a test CBXFEL integrated into LCLS FEL at SLAC.
The successful candidate will:
Play a role in development, accomplishment, and characterization of x-ray optics and x-ray diagnostics components for the CBXFEL x-ray cavity as well as in deployment of these components into the test CBXFEL x-ray cavity.
Play a role in preparation of the x-ray cavity system for the CBXFEL experiments.
Contribute towards the execution of the CBXFEL test experiments at LCLS.
Contribute to the development of x-ray cavity alignment procedures – with application of machine learning tools in particular.
Contribute to R&D activities for realization of the real full fledged CBXFELs (beyond the test device).
Document research results; present them at meetings and conferences; and publish research results in the refereed journals and conference proceedings.
