Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Production Medical Isotope Program Manager (PM) for the Isotope Processing and Manufacturing Division (IPMD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  This position will focus on transitioning manufacturing processes from R&D to Production and managing those processes for the reliable delivery of radioisotope products to support our world class radioisotope production program.  This work supports the largest radioisotope production and research portfolio within the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science for Isotope R&D and Production (DOE-IP).  Work is performed in a variety of environments including gloveboxes & shielded hot cells within several unique radiological and nuclear facilities throughout the ORNL campus.

 

This position reports to the IPMD Director and will require significant coordination with Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) organizations (Radioisotope R&D, Programs, Engineering, Process Coordination, Project Integration, etc.) and matrixed organizations (Environmental, Safety, Health, Quality, Security, etc.). 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Serve as IPMD’s Production Medical Isotope Program Manager (PM) for transitioning radioisotope manufacturing processes from R&D to operations and managing those processes to enable safe and secure production of isotopes.  PM plans, develops, and coordinates program/project management activities with operations, quality and other matrixed organizations. Oversees projects from inception to completion including conceptual planning, technical design, and project completion. Assembles, directs, and manages multidiscipline teams comprised of engineers, scientists, technicians, analysts, and contractors.  There is no expectation to routinely publish.

 

  • Responsible for program/project cost, schedule, and performance of production medical isotopes.
  • Manage multiple transition projects simultaneously, within scope, schedule, budget and/or available funding, from project initiation to transition to operations.
  • Develops project definitions, scopes of work, project schedule(s), and project baseline forecasts that include cost/spending profiles. 
  • Reports project status and conducts periodic project and customer meetings to promote and facilitate communication, review progress and performance, discuss issues, and facilitate problem resolution. 
  • Proactively identify potential issues (cost overruns, schedule delays, product quality, noncompliance, etc.), and resolve timely to minimize impact to project (cost, schedule, and performance).
  • Coordinate technical issue resolution with R&D team, Program Management, and others as appropriate.
  • Form, lead, and participate in teams to drive issue resolution and effective solution implementation.
  • Provide oversight of the development of technical solutions to meet customer requirements and ensure required customer technical specifications are met.
  • Measure performance and identify/eliminate deficiencies.
  • Support occurrence reporting, issues management, and management assessments to ensure timely reporting, investigations, and identification of trends.
  • Coordinate with ISED and support organizations to ensure the flawless transition of new production processes to IPMD.
  • Resolve problems and conflicts within the project and the project team.
  • Ability to work independently to resolve program/project issues.
  • Assist the IPMD Director with other duties as assigned.

  • To stakeholders for effective communication and successful execution of program/project activities.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in technical, business, project management, or related field, with a minimum of 4 years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and applicable experience. 
  • Understanding of project management fundamentals and software.
  • Experience in radiochemical processing operations
  • Strong analytical and problem identification/resolution skills.
  • Quality-focused and detail-oriented. 
  • An understanding of manufacturing and quality processes.
  • Ability to work and communicate (written and oral) effectively with diverse teams of engineers, scientists, and technicians.
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal oversight.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Teams).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with isotope production.
  • Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) experience.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute.
  • Advanced degree in business or engineering.
  • Strong project leadership skills. 
  • Leadership and/or significant support roles in a radiological/nuclear facilities.
  • Proven ability to function well in a Production environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Experience with DOE safety, security, and regulatory requirements.
