Purpose

 

The Senior Manager will work as part of the Internal Audit team that covers end to end processes in the Global Banking & Markets and Treasury business lines and assist the Head of Audit UK and the Chief Auditor, Europe in assessing the effectiveness of controls in front / middle / back offices and other functions that support these business lines.

 

The Senior Manager contributes to the overall success of the Audit Department in UK and Europe ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.  Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

 

The Internal Audit Department plays a key role in the risk management process of the Bank. Its mandate is to provide independent and objective assurance over the design and operation of the Bank’s controls and operational processes and to provide advisory services designed to improve the Bank’s operations.

 

The Senior Manager will be required to have strong capital markets and treasury product knowledge, good knowledge of market risk management techniques, operational processes and controls, and a good understanding and knowledge of UK and EU regulatory environment.

 

The Senior Manager should be proficient at applying risk-based auditing standards, practices, techniques, processes and methodologies to the performance and review of audits.

 

Accountabilities

 

  • Act primarily as Officer in Charge (OIC) for assigned projects, processes and units. May act as Audit Principal in some low to medium complexity assignments.
  • Be the Europe Compliance Risk champion contributing towards Europe’s audit coverage of Compliance and Conduct risk.
  • Ensure Scotiabank standards and the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Code of Ethics are maintained in completion of all assignments.
  • Lead the execution, planning, and reporting on the assigned audit projects. Obtains a thorough understanding of the business/unit/process and associated risks, develops a risk-based audit plan/procedures, and schedules timing and resources.
  • Manages and supervises end- to- end process of the execution of the audit and ensures nature and extent of testing is appropriate to support the objective, scope and overall opinion. Completes timely review of workpapers, ensures internal control weaknesses are clearly documented with recommendations addressing the root cause and are communicated timely to management.
  • Ensures audit results are gathered, determine the root cause of the problem and the associated impact and report accordingly. Confirm the audit results with the auditee. Present an overview of the audit results and findings to line management. Follow-up for corrective action/progress against any reported issues. Escalate where necessary.
  • Ensures audit reports are written to a consistent high standard and are finalized within established department metrics.
  • Carries out specific projects or investigations of a moderate or high complexity and/or confidential nature. Plan, document and seek agreement in advance to the project approach and confirm conclusions upon completion in writing.
  • Manage self-development by confirming/communicating job expectations, identifying mentors/coaches and enquiring about training needs, ensuring timely completion of performance appraisals, recruiting, interviewing and selecting candidates, manages assigned staff.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
  • Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviors; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and managing succession and development planning for the team.

 

 

Audit Planning

 

  • Assists in the development and execution of a comprehensive and strategic audit plan. Ensures auditable entities remain within cycle and conducts ongoing monitoring activities to stay abreast of changes (business/industry/regulatory) / emerging risks / themes or systemic issues that may impact the risk assessment of the audit universe and the audit plan. May also execute assigned audit activities independently as a team member under the direction of the OIC on assignments.
  • Identifies systemic/emerging issues and changes planned/undertaken by the audit client that will impact the audit plan through discussion with the Audit Director.  This may include preplanning meetings and walkthroughs with audit clients to confirm understanding of the processes and activities subject to audit.
  • Develops a thorough understanding of the business, risks and processes for assigned projects through a review of the Business overviews, Risk Assessments, Bank manuals and other related information.
  • Directs the planning of audits for diverse units by ensuring scope and extent of work is in accordance with the approved plan, timing and budget are reasonable, procedures are efficient, appropriate resources are assigned, and risks understood. Prepare planning documentation and sample selection in accordance with the Audit Methodology.

 

Auditing and Execution

 

  • Executes and manage assigned activities independently in accordance with the Department Standards ensuring the nature and extent of testing is appropriate to support the audit opinion, ensuring appropriate completion and review of documentation prepared by audit team members.
  • Completes on-site review of assignments per planned timelines, ensuring adequacy of work performed to support the audit conclusions and compliance with Audit Department Methodology.
  • May execute assigned audit activities independently as a team member under the direction of the OIC on assignments.
  • Ensures documentation of work is of a high standard, supports audit conclusions and is in accordance with department standards.
  • Recommends changes to the scope/extent of the audit based on initial research/audit findings.

 

Problem Identification

 

  • Ensure audit results are gathered, determine the root cause of the problem and associated impact, and report accordingly with limited supervision. Confirm results of the audit work with the audit client.
  • Prepare and/or review audit findings for presentation to management, document reported issues and monitor the quarterly status of outstanding issues as assigned.

 

Reporting/Communication

 

  • Is proficient in drafting audit reports and correspondence demonstrating good understanding of issues articulating key risks, materiality and associated impact in accordance with the Department Audit Methodology.  Recommendations should build in best practices observed in other units.
  • Review/edit reporting from team members and summarize issues in final audit report for assignments of higher complexity.
  • Present findings to line management and conduct audit closing meetings including a discussion /presentation to management with an overview of the audit results and findings for those assignments. 

 

Team/People Management

 

  • Comply with department established HR Management policies and procedures.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to staff by providing direction and communicating expectations; impart specialized skills to other audit officers through peer discussions and cooperation on cross-functional audits, coaching and performance management.
  • Prepare periodic and annual performance self-assessments, personal goals and objectives for measurement of performance, a career development and training plan and monitor for achievement/completion.
  • Manage self-development by/through confirming/communicating job expectations and assessing progress; identifying mentors/coaches and enquiring about training needs; ensuring timely completion of performance appraisals; recruiting, interviewing and selecting candidates.

 

Special Projects

 

  • As directed by management, carry out specific projects or investigations of a moderate or high complexity and/or confidential nature. 
  • Plan, document and seek agreement in advance to the project approach and confirm conclusions upon completion in writing.
  • Assist with the peer review Quality Assurance Program including review of documentation and reports of assigned audit project and reporting of findings to Professional Practice Group.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Code of Conduct.
  • Contributes to a high performing environment and fosters an inclusive work environment, supporting the vison/values/business strategy for the team.

 

Experience/Education

 

  • Highly proficient at applying risk-based auditing standards, practices, techniques, processes and methodologies to performance and review of audits.
  • Working knowledge of the operations and regulatory environments of each of the audit units globally, as required for specific areas of assigned responsibility.
  • Ability to supervise multiple projects at any given time.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) to work with staff and management at various levels.
  • Strong people management and coaching/development skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in the use of data analytic or visualization tools.
  • Proven ability to work in high levels of ambiguity and in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Requires an undergraduate degree in Business, Accounting or equivalent at a minimum.
  • Extensive financial institutions internal audit experience, focused on capital markets activities.
  • Knowledge of UK and EU regulatory environment.
  • Good project management, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task complex audits and work with other audit teams will be essential.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
