We are therefore seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and dynamic Youth Justice Senior Practitioner.

ABOUT THE JOB

With the support of the YJS Head of Service, Service Manager and Team Managers you will provide direct services to young people subject to Statutory Court Orders to provide case management, supervision and lead on our Effective Practice worksteam:

The role would lead on specialist workstream to:

-           Co-ordinate the termly menu of interventions to children known to the YJS and RESET (the adolescent safeguarding team, made up of a range of agencies with a view to support children and young people at risk of exploitation, serious youth violence or on the cusp of care) 

-           Co-ordinate and lead on the school holidays Programme (including HAF) for RESET to include engaging with partner agencies , and parents / carers  to support children to keep safe and thrive 

-           Ensure the voice of the child is captured, and responses evidenced  by delivering services that involves and engages children at the earliest stages 

-           Ensure all children have been supported utilising our Restorative approach to support and identify barriers and learning styles.

Youth Justice Officers are required to complete accurate and thorough assessments using Asset Plus. They will ensure that plans are coordinated, innovative, creative and centred around the young person’s needs and risks. Youth Justice Officers provide written and verbal reports to the Youth and Crown Court and acting as Court Officer when required.

Candidates will have the skills to work effectively in assessing young people within a multi-agency setting to safeguard children, prevent re-offending; protect victims and the wider community, as well as embedding a child- first and trauma informed approach to ensure we obtain meaningful outcomes for children and their families.

The role operates within a diverse borough, with children and young people who demonstrate a complex range of needs; showing empathy and understanding are a daily part of the job.

ABOUT YOU

Applicants will have knowledge of the legislation relating to children and young people including the Children’s Act 1989 and 2004, Crime and Disorder Act 1989, Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012. Knowledge of relevant Key Performance Indicators and National Standards.

The post holder will have:

• Previous experience of working with challenging children, preferably within a youth justice setting.

• Experience of writing reports

• Experience of working in a multi-agency/public/voluntary setting

• Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures

• Have an enhanced knowledge and understanding of the principles and processes of systemic practice and restorative justice principles

• Experience of performing case management tasks including assessment, intervention planning and delivery

• Educated to Degree level and/or equivalent experience

The London Borough of Newham is located only 5 miles east of London. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east.  It is well connected  by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Crossrail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. The London City Airport which serves major European cities is located at Royal Albert Dock. Newham has the youngest overall population in the country. It was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and contains most of the Olympic Park including the London Stadium. It has a thriving arts quarter with the Theatre Royal Stratford East offering excellent entertainment for all the family. There is the University of East London which has two campuses in Newham, one in Stratford and another next to the regenerated Royal Albert Dock. It also has a large Westfield shopping Centre in Stratford which has all the major retailers there.

 

 

Newham has a large housing regeneration programme that will build over 1,000 new council homes by 2022.
