General Description and Classification Standards:

Drives cars, small trucks, vans, and buses to transport employees, groups, and materials as needed. Transports mail and packages and/or provides general support to the department, city and/or Motor Transport Services. Loads vehicles in a safe manner; performs basic vehicle maintenance tasks; performs various other assignments as needed. Individuals entering this level must already possess the basic knowledge of the work and the required motor skills and physical capabilities to carry out basic tasks.

Supervision Received:

Works under direct supervision and follows standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned. 

Safely operates, inspects and maintains a variety of equipment such as a 29-passenger bus or smaller, 15-passenger van and multiple equipment/vehicles during the course of completing daily task duties as assigned. Adheres to daily route schedule. Assists passengers in boarding and disembarking by guiding and directing and providing aide in program participation when required. Provides explanation of sudden stops or sharp turns when emergency maneuvers are required to passengers. Picks up and/or delivers items such as mail and packages and conducts various errands such as employee transportation, bank transactions, and special assignments. Conducts pre/post inspection of equipment according to departmental policies and procedures. Ensures equipment meets safety requirements by maintaining scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs. Reports any mechanical problems associated with equipment/vehicle as appropriate. Completes service request forms to request vehicle repairs. Ensures that all duties assigned on the daily task sheets are completed and necessary reports are submitted upon job completion. Prepares, generates, completes, and receives various forms, reports, daily logs, maintenance records and other documents and forwards as appropriate. Follows all safety precautions necessary in operating equipment in a safe and efficient manner and ensures that vehicle fuel tanks are properly filled and ready for operation. Communicates with supervisor to relay information and receive instructions and directions concerning daily route, delivery schedule, special assignments, and any other potential problems. Responds to routine request for information from officials, employees, members of the staff, the public or other individuals. Operates city issued radio and/or cell phone for communication concerning passenger information, road clearance, emergency changes, etc. Wears appropriate uniform as instructed. May provide other support duties; including: answering phones, filing, and copying.

Must be courteous and dependable in operating equipment. Must be physically able to operate a variety of job-related machines at level requirements for active work. Must be able to perform physical labor as well as move or carry related objects or materials. Ability to effectively use written and verbal communication to convey or exchange professional information. Ability to follow policies, procedures, plans and activities. Ability to read and interpret street maps to reach correct destinations. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other staff members. Ability to make independent judgments in absence of supervision. Ability to acquire and expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.

Minimum Qualifications, Education and Experience:

High school diploma (HSD) or general equivalency degree (GED) 

1 year of experience in operation of a passenger vehicle/bus up to a 29-passenger, van and various vehicles; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position

Must possess a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Class B and passenger endorsement.

Preferred Education & Experience:

One year or more of experience in the operation of a passenger vehicle/bus up to a 29 passengers, van and various vehicles; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position

Licensures and Certifications:

Must possess a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Class B and passenger endorsement.
