The Phlebotomist serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving specimens; preparing specimens for laboratory testing; performing screening procedures.
STATEMENT OF VALUES:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with Laboratory information system log, bringing discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.
Verifies patient by reading patient identification.
Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures, fingerstick and infant heel pricks.
Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, observing isolation procedures.
Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
Preparing specimens for transportation, including labeling vials accurately and matching blood specimens to patients.
Ordering laboratory supplies as required.
Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes.
Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures, complying with legal & health regulations.
Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Joint Commission International (JCI) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) standards.
Enhances laboratory department and hospital reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Diploma in phlebotomy/Medical Laboratory Assistant or equivalent
Proven experience working as a phlebotomist.
Understanding of proper patient identification methods.
Knowledge of legal requirements pertaining to drawing blood, handling specimen samples, and the use of relevant medical equipment.
Experience using effective puncture techniques.
Knowledge of testing protocols and the use of testing equipment.
Superb dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Keen attention to detail
