Department: Analysis

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: UK - London

Reporting To: Alexa Strobel

Compensation: GBP 58,000 - GBP 72,000 / year

Description

At Field, we recognise the increasing complexity of energy markets and fundamental volatility drivers, and use our in-house power systems model to make data-driven decisions (e.g. executing hedges, trades and tolls). The Power Systems Modeller sits at the heart of this by further developing and improving our in-house power systems model. This is not a consulting / advisory type of role, but a role that impacts the business's bottom line. The role sits within the cross-functional Strategy & Analysis team, working with all areas of the business.

You will be responsible for the development and maintenance of our in-house modelling capabilities, generating price and revenue forecasts. These forecasts will be used to execute hedges, trades and tolls, input into strategic decision making and market analysis across short... and long term time horizons driving bottom line, real business value. Your work will be highly varied and will include: refactoring existing Python code, improving processes (e.g. AWS integration), regional expansion (e.g. Germany, Italy, Spain) and new feature development (e.g. flexible demand, subsidies, emerging technologies). You will be expected to own subject matter expertise across market fundamentals, mechanisms and model development - and to be able to communicate this clearly to potentially non-technical audiences.

This technical subject matter expert role will combine expert programming skills with experience of digesting and converting abstract information and data into tangible forecasting methodologies. Our modelling has a focus on fundamentals drivers and uses a mixture of optimisation and statistical approaches, so we expect you to have some background in either Operations Research or Data Science.

This is a great opportunity for a detail-oriented modeller, keen to make a real difference in the renewable energy and zero-carbon flexibility space.

Key Responsibilities

This is a broad and varied role with the opportunity to have massive impact. Key responsibilities include:
• Develop novel methodologies for forecasting market-level prices and BESS revenue curves: Assess available data, understand market structures and model how to best emulate these within the existing framework with an eye on robust, appropriately sensitive and easily explainable results driven by underlying fundamental drives.
• Own, maintain and improve the existing in-house model: Support general maintenance and improvements of the existing model codebase, challenge existing methodologies, respond to changes in policy and market reforms. and help us scale model use by thinking about the end-to-end user experience.
• Provide fundamentals market expertise: Together with Analysis colleagues, provide technical expertise around the energy and ancillary services markets to the Treasury/Tech teams and wider business and senior stakeholders.
• Feed quantitative, data-backed recommendations to support decision-making within Field: Supporting the Fundamentals Lead, produce high-quality market analysis and robust scenario modelling to inform strategic decisions making, for example assessing the impact of regulatory modifications or utilising revenue forecasts to determine Field capacity market bidding strategies.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

A bit about you
• You're detail-oriented from start to finish (from inputs through to outputs), willing to get into the weeds of QA and ensure models are working correctly and accurately
• You enjoy solving problems - from structuring modelling approaches to debugging models to determining the most impactful way to generate model outputs.
• You're enthusiastic, curious and knowledgeable about the energy storage industry.
• You're very organised - you'll be spinning a few plates at once, so you'll need to have tried and tested methods for keeping on top of a varied workload at your fingertips.
• You're an open, clear communicator who enjoys working collaboratively - there are no 'lone wolves' at Field, we're all in this together.

The Skills You'll Need
• Background in energy system modelling within a specialist consultancy or practice, research environment, or energy market participant
• Experience with forecasting methodologies, in at least one of the following categories
• Using optimisation/Operations Research techniques
• Statistical approaches/DS/ML
• Strong modelling skills - ability to distil key information and convert this into equations reflective of the underlying drivers
• Strong programming experience, preferably in Python
• Familiarity with software development best practices (e.g. Git, AWS integration)
• Problem solving and analytical skills
• Able to communicate complex technical topics in a clear and concise manner to non-technical audiences
• Nice-to-have: experience with an algebraic modelling language (E.g. GAMS, AMPL) or Python modelling packages (e.g. Pyomo, CVXPY), experience with open-source or commercial solvers, experience with gas price forecasting or demand modelling
