Platforms & Software (P&S)

The Platforms and Software (P&S) division maintains a centre of excellence for technology and broader infrastructure-related innovation, translating market needs into core expansion programmes to enable market development. We ensure that products and services are constantly pushing the boundaries of satellite communications.  The P&S team is responsible for delivering development programmes, including satellites and launchers, ground infrastructure (ground stations, networks, user terminals and access technology), regulatory, market access and product and service development. 

Job Description

Primary role purpose:

Viasat’s P&S division is looking for an Integration Engineer to join the team responsible for the design, development and delivery of our Airline programmes. This will include completing the delivery of currently scoped developments as well as future functionality and enhancements to the existing Viasat solutions. This is a wide-ranging technical role that will require the successful candidate to play an analyst and integration role in activities including design and development, system integration, acceptance testing, service introduction, and third level support. The successful applicant must be self-motivated and be capable of completing complex tasks with minimum supervision and have the confidence and ability to promote improvements and introduce new technologies.

The role will require co-ordination with a wide range of other project teams both within and external to Viasat. The successful candidate will be required to represent Viasat as the technical expert in meetings with customers and must be capable of dealing confidently with experts in similar and different disciplines.

Viasat is currently going through significant growth and this role will evolve to reflect the changing business needs. The role may require the ability to travel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver solutions to airlines in time, on budget and to requirements
  • Participate and contribute to design reviews, including review of detailed functional specifications
  • Working in the lab setting up new builds and environments
  • Create and test system/software configuration files
  • Configuring firewalls and other network devices
  • Develop test procedures in support of test campaigns and performance evaluation exercises
  • Create and maintain technical documentation to ensure efficient planning and execution
  • Manage and maintain all required design and engineering documents
  • Participate in third level support for resolving production issues
  • Work with solution vendors and internal stakeholders to define and design new services and features to improve performance or meet new service requirements
  • Review existing software and infrastructure to identify areas for improvement, added scalability, quality, performance, security maintainability and architectural integrity

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • University degree level or equivalent in Computing Science, Telecommunications or related technical discipline
  • Excellent capacity at debugging complex systems, developing and implementing quick fixes as well as leading and delivering long term permanent solutions to problems
  • Extensive experience on Linux administration. RHCSA certification or equivalent knowledge required
  • Ability to quickly develop proof of concepts / prototypes from scratch
  • Excellent knowledge of TCP/IP networking
  • Excellent knowledge of iptables / iproute / tc stack
  • Proven knowledge of SQL (PostgreSQL)
  • Proficiency with SELinux and good systems security understanding
  • Basic knowledge of git
  • Experience in customer facing role
  • Proven experience in documenting and describing complex systems.
  • Methodical approach to designing and testing systems
  • Excellent organisational skills and communication skills
  • Ability to quickly learn unfamiliar software, infrastructure and tools
