Product Designer at PhysicsX
London, United Kingdom

Job Descrption
PhysicsX is a deep-tech company of scientists and engineers, developing machine learning applications to massively accelerate physics simulations and enable a new frontier of optimisation opportunities in design, engineering, and systems control. We help our customers fundamentally improve their concepts and designs, transform their engineering processes and drive operational product performance. We do this in some of the most advanced and important industries of our time – including Renewables & Sustainability, Space, Aerospace, Medical Devices, Additive Manufacturing and Energy. Our work creates positive impact for society, be it by improving the design of artificial hearts, reducing CO2 emissions from aircraft and road vehicles, or increasing the performance of wind turbines.  We are a rapidly growing company but prefer to fly under the radar to protect our customers’ confidentiality. We are about to take the next leap in building out our technology platform and product offering. In this context, we are looking for a capable and enthusiastic cloud engineer to join our team. If all of this sounds exciting to you, we would love to talk (even if you don't tick all the boxes).
Position OverviewWe are seeking talented mid-weight Product Designer(s) to join our growing design team. You will work closely with our simulation engineers, data scientists and customers to develop an understanding of the physics and engineering challenges we are solving. As a member of our design team, you will play a pivotal role in developing AI and ML solutions for design engineering applications, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to drive innovation in our products. You will also work closely in 2D/3D spaces, translating complex ideas into intuitive and visually compelling designs. This role requires a creative thinker with a strong eye for detail, who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can effectively design for expert users in enterprise contexts.

What you will do

  • Conduct user research to gain insights into user needs, behaviours, and pain points.
  • Translate user research findings into actionable design solutions that address user needs and business objectives.
  • Create wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs that effectively communicate design concepts and user interactions.
  • Collaborate closely within cross-functional teams including product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment and successful execution of design initiatives.
  • Iterate on designs based on feedback, user testing, and data analysis to continually improve the user experience.
  • Design for expert users and enterprise solutions, understanding the complexities and nuances of these environments.
  • Maintain and evolve design systems and guidelines to ensure consistency and scalability across our product(s).
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies to continually enhance design processes and deliverables.

What the ideal candidate looks like

  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in product design, with a strong portfolio showcasing end-to-end design projects.
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, Dovetail, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.
  • Experience conducting user research and translating insights into actionable design solutions.
  • Strong understanding of UX/UI principles and best practices, with the ability to design intuitive and engaging user experiences.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively present and defend design decisions.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment, with a proactive and adaptable approach to problem-solving.
  • Experience designing for expert users (e.g., Mechanical Engineers, Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers) in enterprise situations is a plus.
  • Experience in data science / machine learning is a plus
  • Experience working in 3d design (e.g., Houdini, Blender, Unity3D) is a plus

What we offer

  • Be part of something larger: Make an impact and meaningfully shape an early-stage company. Work on some of the most exciting and important topics there are. Do something you can be proud of
  • Work with a fun group of colleagues that support you, challenge you and help you grow. We come from many different backgrounds, but what we have in common is the desire to operate at the very top of our fields and solve truly challenging problems in science and engineering. If you are similarly capable, caring and driven, you'll find yourself at home here
  • Experience a truly flat hierarchy. Voicing your ideas is not only welcome but encouraged, especially when they challenge the status quo
  • Work sustainably, striking the right balance between work and personal life.
  • Receive a competitive compensation and equity package, in addition to plenty of perks such as generous vacation and parental leave, complimentary office food, as well as fun outings and events
  • Work in a flexible setting, with your choice of either our lovely London Shoreditch or Bicester Heritage offices to collaborate in, and a good proportion from home if so desired. Get the opportunity to occasionally visit our customers' engineering sites and experience first-hand how our work is transforming their ways of working
  • Use first-class equipment for working in-office or remotely, including in-house HPC and GPU stack
We value diversity and are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of sex, race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. We strongly encourage individuals from groups traditionally underrepresented in tech to apply. To help make a change, we sponsor bright women from disadvantaged backgrounds through their university degrees in science and mathematics.
